Shucking an Oyster
How to Shuck a Lilliwaup Oyster
Ready to unlock the delicious magic inside our Lilliwaup oysters? Don’t worry, shucking isn’t as intimidating as it sounds. With a little patience, the right tools, and a touch of PNW spirit, you’ll be slurping in no time.
Step 1: Suit Up Like a Pro
Oysters are slippery little guys, so protect your hand! Grab a shucking glove or fold a kitchen towel into thirds and wrap it snugly around your non-dominant hand. Your thumb will thank you later.
Step 2: Get a Grip
Hold your oyster with the flatter side up (that’s the top) and the hinge—the pointy bit where the shells meet—facing you
Step 3: Nudge the Door Open
Take your shucking knife and gently but firmly insert it into the hinge. Think of it as knocking politely, not kicking down the door. A little wiggle can help if the shell is feeling shy.
Step 4: Pop Goes the Hinge
With the knife in place, give it a confident twist. When you hear that telltale pop, congratulations—you’re in!
Step 5: Lift the Curtain
Run your knife along the inside of the top shell to release it, then lift it away to reveal the oyster in all its briny glory. Feel free to take a moment to admire your handiwork.
Step 6: Cut and Savor
Slide the knife under the oyster to free it completely. Now, slurp it straight from the shell like a seasoned shucker or use a fork if that’s more your style. Pro tip: A squeeze of lemon or dash of hot sauce makes everything better.
Serving Tip:
Chill your oysters on a bed of crushed ice to keep them fresh and fabulous. And don’t wait too long—oysters are best enjoyed right after they’re shucked.
Now that you know how to shuck like a true PNWer, dive into your Lilliwaup oysters and enjoy the taste of Hood Canal!
